Outside Plant (OSP) Technician

Appalachian Electric Cooperative (AEC) is a Rural Electric Cooperative serving parts of Jefferson, Grainger, Hamblen, and Sevier counties in East Tennessee. We currently have an opportunity for an Outside Plant Technician our New Market, Tennessee office. AEC offers a highly competitive total compensation package.

The Outside Plant Technician is responsible for the effective installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of fiber to the x (FTTx) outside plant including but not limited to fiber optic cables, drop cables, optical splitters, and associated equipment. 

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required with additional training in electronics, engineering, networking or telecommunications preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years hands-on experience with the installation and operation of FTTx components including but not limited to central office, transport, feeder, distribution, drops, cabinets, splitters, ONTs, splice points, jumpers, hand holes, and pedestals
  • Have or acquire the skills and techniques necessary to distinguish exposed live parts from other parts of electric equipment, determine the nominal voltage of exposed live parts, and the clearance distances
  • Strong working knowledge of OTDR operation and testing, light testing, fiber troubleshooting and fiber plant design
  • Able to splice fiber using industry standards
  • Must hold a valid Tennessee Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B), or possess the ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days hire and maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Certification through the Electronics Technicians Association (ETA) as a Fiber Optics Installer (ETA FOI) and a Fiber Optics Technician – Outside Plant (ETA FOT-OSP) or ability to become certified within 12 months.

Essential Job Functions

  • Perform all necessary activities in the installation, maintenance, repair and ongoing operations of the outside fiber plant used to deliver residential and commercial services
  • Scope jobs for direct installation, maintenance, and repair of residential and commercial accounts and fiber plant extensions
  • Provide timely and courteous service and communication to members, coworkers and the general public
  • Mandatory on-call duty with overtime and on-call shift rotations are required
  • Must be able to regularly lift, carry, push and/or pull up to 50 lbs
  • Must be able to occasionally lift, carry, push and/or pull up to 100 lbs with assistance
  • Requires climbing and working in high places

Full time residence must be within 30 minutes of the Cooperative main office within 90 days of hire

Journeyman Lineman

Appalachian Electric Cooperative (AEC) is a Rural Electric Cooperative serving parts of Jefferson, Grainger, Hamblen, and Sevier counties in East Tennessee. We currently have an opportunity for a Journeyman Lineman in our New Market, Tennessee office.  AEC offers a highly competitive total compensation package.

The Journeyman Lineman participates in the operation, maintenance, and construction of electrical power distribution and transmission line facilities of the Cooperative and in compliance with the standard practices of the Rural Utilities Services (RUS), the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and AEC.

 

Required Job Qualifications

  • Proof of completion of an approved apprenticeship lineman program
  • Minimum 1 year recent experience as a journeyman lineman with an electrical utility or utility contractor
  • Must hold a valid Tennessee Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B), or possess the ability to obtain a CDL within six months of hire. Must maintain an insurable driving record

Essential Job Functions

  • Works around and on energized and de-energized equipment and lines with voltage to 69kV
  • Assembles repairs, disassembles, erects, or moves line structures including installing and removing cross arms, guys, pins, insulators, and other line hardware
  • Sets, resets, and stubs poles; frames poles and prepares structures including string, sag, repair, remove, and tie in conductor
  • Installs, repairs, and removes meters, streetlights and security light systems
  • Performs work on the underground primary and secondary system, including but not limited to, pulling cable, making cable splices, installing and connecting underground pad mounted transformers, and making underground distribution terminations
  • Installs, makes field repairs, removes and operates line protective and control equipment including reclosers, sectionalizers, oil circuit breakers, oil switches, regulators, capacitors, fuses, lightning arresters, and grounds
  • Installs, makes field repairs, and removes transformers including metering transformers; assists with the installation of primary meters; builds and repairs mountings, platforms, and racks making connections and performing other duties relative to transformer and meter maintenance and installation
  • Utilizes Cooperative line construction equipment, including material handling bucket trucks, digger derrick trucks and line pulling/tensioning machinery
  • Works overtime as required including reporting during emergency or outage conditions

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • The position requires working outside in varying weather conditions
  • The work required in this position poses a potential risk of electrical shock
  • Must be able to walk over uneven, steep and difficult terrain for distances of over one mile on a regular, recurring basis
  • Must be able to work at heights up to 100 feet including working in bucket trucks or other aerial devices and climbing wood poles and steel structures
  • May require working in trenches
  • Regularly exposed to equipment and devices with moving parts
  • Must reside within 30 mile response time of Coop within 90 days of hire

Information Technology (IT)

Appalachian Electric Cooperative (AEC) provides electric service to 47,000 members in  East Tennessee—including homes, farms, businesses, and industries. We own and maintain an electric distribution system that covers 600 square miles in parts of Grainger, Hamblen, Hawkins, Jefferson, and Sevier counties.

We currently have an opportunity for an Information Technology (IT) Specialist in our New Market, Tennessee office. The IT Specialist provides professional support for a wide range of technologies used by the Cooperative’s end users.

Job Qualifications

  • 2 years experience working in a help desk or technical support environment, customer service or administrative role
  • Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or related field desirable
  • A+ and Network+ certifications desirable

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for technical needs of end users including; but not limited to; answering how-to questions, providing system and network status, and troubleshooting various technologies
  • Responsible for documenting support requests received via email, telephone, electronic ticketing systems, etc.
  • Installation, maintenance, and configuration of Cooperative technologies including workstations, peripherals, and mobile devices
  • Available for overtime as required including assisting outside of normal work hours during emergency or outage situations
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work at heights up to 12 feet
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record
  • The position requires frequently lifting, push/pulling and/or carrying 10-20 lbs., and occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs.
